Lead Partner: James Watt College
International Partners: College (Overseas)
Source of Funding: EC
James Watt College played host to a visit from a college from the Halland region of Sweden recently. Lyn Knox from the International Unit helped to organise the event and commented: “The college is quite small with fewer than 200 students but covers a pretty wide field. It is based on the folk high school tradition in Scandinavia, folkhögskola. Originally inspired by the Danish thinker Grundtvig, folkhögskola was aimed at giving a good general education to the sons and later also daughters of farmers, who were unable to move to the cities to get a secondary/ higher education, and now provides both general and specialised courses for adults and young people. The college is both a day college and residential, taking students from all over Sweden. Teaching is free - the students pay for board and lodging but are eligible for loans/ grants. Despite the difference in size we think they had a great deal in common with James Watt College. We split up the group of 16 teachers throughout 6 different schools in the college so they could visit those departments with activities similar to their own. Gosta Hassel (principal) and Asa Spangs (vice principal) spent the afternoon with Alistair Shaw, learning about how the college operates.”
