College Professional Adviser to Scottish Government
The role of the Professional Adviser's is three fold; to advise Scottish Government on college sector perspectives on ‘Curriculum for Excellence'; to help further implement the ‘Curriculum for Excellence' in Scotland's colleges and to act as an Ambassador for Scottish Government.

Valerie Macdonald, Professional Adviser, Curriculum for Excellence within the Scottish Government.

Val qualified as a Registered General Nurse and Registered Sick Children's Nurse in 1979 and worked in health and education within the NHS and the Third World until 1987. Her career in Further and Higher Education and training and development commenced in 1989 within Scottish and English colleges and in the private sector. In 2000, Val was appointed as Head of Department at Borders College and at present is seconded from her role there as Head of Department Care and General Education.

Ian Butchart, Professional Adviser, Curriculum for Excellence within the Scottish Government

Ian qualified as a secondary school teacher in economics and business studies before spending 18 years working in the private sector, initially as a marketing manager for a group of local newspapers and latterly as Business Development Director of an advertising agency. He was appointed to a full time lecturing post at Central College, Glasgow in 1994, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 1999 and an Assistant Principal for Curriculum in 2006. In March 2009 he was seconded as a Professional Adviser to the Scottish Government..

A lifelong learner, Ian is an elected member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing; has recently completed a part-time Masters Degree in Education at the University of Glasgow, and is about to commence a PhD in the field of education policy and practice.
