The Learning By Volunteering Project, funded by SFC, is a partnership between Angus College (lead partner), Adam Smith College, Langside College and Scotland’s Colleges. John Burt, principal of Angus College , is Project Chair.
The project began in late 2009 with the broad general aim of promoting the development of cultures of volunteering in colleges which articulate with citizenship, employability, and curriculum for excellence for example. The focus of activities in the 3 college partners was to actively drive forward the concept of encouraging learner volunteering to enhance their formal learning. A key aspect of the project has been the development of resources and the sharing of these, which are freely available on the project website.
One of the project outcomes was the development of Awards which recognise and celebrate volunteering, and the colleges have developed their own awards with associated local awards ceremonies. In addition The Scotland’s Colleges National Volunteering Awards were launched earlier this year, with two categories, individual learner volunteering and team volunteering. Judging was undertaken by suitably qualified and experienced professionals from the Third Sector, and focused on entrants being able to articulate the benefits their volunteering brought to themselves as individuals, to their team, and also to the organizations they volunteered for, their clients, communities, or the environment.
The following demonstrates the tremendous range of volunteering activities our college learners are engaging with and announces the winners in each of the two categories.
