The Motivated College logoBackground

The Motivated College programme has been developed from the work of Alan McLean, author of The Motivated School. Alan, Principal Psychologist with Glasgow City Council, has spent seven years researching what motivates learners to learn and has worked with us to adapt his materials based on this research for use in Scotland's colleges. Information on Alan's work can be found on the Learning about Learning website.

Programme

The programme has four development strands which encompass working with Senior Managers, Teaching Staff, Support Staff and Learners in colleges. These strands can be adapted to suit the particular structures of individual colleges but involvement of staff at all levels and groups of learners is essential to the effective delivery of the programme.

The format of delivery which has proved successful and is recommended is:

  • two sessions with a group from the Executive / Senior Management Team
  • three workshops for Teaching Staff who will be working with students involved in the programme
  • two workshops for Support Staff who are in direct contact with students
  • two one and a half hour sessions with groups of learners identified by the college.

The sessions for each staff group are tailored to meet the demands of their professional role in creating a motivational environment and for learners to ensure they develop an understanding of their motivation to learn.

Keeping Momentum

In order to build capacity across the college and to sustain the initial activity of the training programme we will provide training for key staff to become licensed to deliver training to colleagues and learners across the college. We may also request that Motivated College Licensees deliver training to staff and/or students in other colleges on our behalf. Licensees will be required to attend an annual refresher day to maintain their licence.
