Cardonald College Winner of Student LearningWinner - Cardonald College (Amy McGrandles: "The Amy Experience")

Amy McGrandles accessed Cardonald College in 2005.  Amy is registered blind, has arthritis and Asperger’s Syndrome.  At her initial interview the challenges in supporting Amy were evident, but it was agreed that Amy’s motivation to study languages combined with appropriate support strategies could lead to a positive outcome.

Four years later, Amy has achieved 3 modern language Highers (German & Spanish B and C for French) and has developed her social skills to a level of integration with a view to accessing supported employment.

The learning journey for both Amy and the staff who have supported her has been inspirational and has given all involved a reflective awareness of complex disability and how, as a team, the challenges can be met head on.

Banff and Buchan College Highly CommendedHighly Commended - Banff and Buchan College (Lunch Bunch Enterprise)

The ‘Towards Employment' Curriculum for learners with mild to moderate learning disabilities was transformed in August 2008 providing learners with a meaningful and quality learning experience. The curriculum is designed with a Business Enterprise theme allowing learners to develop and consolidate core skills, social skills and practical skills. All learners complete a Personal Learning and Support Plan (PLSP) enabling them to determine their own personal learning pathway by setting feasible social, personal and educational aims and goals.

Learners have created a Catering Enterprise called "the Lunch Bunch" which offers a sit in café for 44 customers and a takeaway providing lunch service for staff and students at the College every Tuesday throughout the college academic year.

Learners are involved in all aspects of the business operation and partake in self evaluation of good practice and areas of further development following each session.

Commended - Adam Smith College (HEALTHFEST)

Adam Smith College Commended Student LearningThe idea of HEALTHFEST emerged from the desire to give students a stimulating and challenging task which would encourage the development of skills and qualities relevant to their future studies and career. The Centre for Education and Care Studies, Health and Social Care Department, of Adam Smith College devised a project for 3 student groups on Pre-Access to Nursing, Midwifery and Health Care courses (SCQF level 5).

Students (with staff support) organised, implemented and evaluated a day-long healthcare festival - HEALTHFEST.

HEALTHFEST sought to provide information on health related issues and cultural diversity to the local community in varied and entertaining ways. There were health displays, workshops, interactive exhibits, schools competitions and a healthy-eating street cafe.

The event was very well attended e.g. approx 450 school children, and judged a great success by attendees. Participating agencies and the organising students were very positive about the event.

Key outcomes include:

  • Adding positively to student learning through additional volunteer staff resources and expertise.

  • Widens applicant's awareness and understanding of FE roles and skill requirements.
  • 47% of all interns to date have secured employment with the College.
  • Enhances College community focus and values.
  • Provides additional 1:1 support for students with additional learning needs.
  • Builds on partnership links with local volunteer agencies and supports national "Manifesto for Change" strategies.
  • Provides volunteer award opportunities.
  • Low cost to College and high value to Interns.
Newbattle Highly Commended Professional LearningHighly Commended - Newbattle Abbey College (Diversification of the Curriculum at Newbattle)

Newbattle Abbey College offers adult students a unique residential experience. Our courses provide opportunities for students with few or no qualifications who are looking to change their lives through education.

Our funding to support our full-time residential programme offered no flexibility to provide places for part-time learners. This meant that many people who would benefit most from the Newbattle experience were unable to take advantage of the opportunity to experience residential learning. We were also keen to offer access to primary carers, many of whom are women and people with families or homes to support who would find it difficult to engage in a full - time residential course.

We wanted to offer the chance to return to education to long-term unemployed adults and those recovering from illness, people who may feel overwhelmed by the prospect of taking up a full-time residential course.

To achieve our aims of widening access we incorporated a blended learning approach into the curriculum.

Our blended learning approach integrates online learning, with face-to-face classroom learning when the students are in residence. Students will study part time over two years to gain our SQA validated Arts and Humanities Award.

Clydebank CollegeCommended - Clydebank College (Creating a Commercially Focused Team)

FE colleges are operating in an increasingly competitive marketplace and need to be commercially focused to maximise opportunities. Clydebank College embarked on this ambitious development programme for staff within the Centre for Business Growth to encourage staff to take on projects aimed at: generating additional funding, cutting costs, introducing new products or services, improving processes or systems, engaging new business clients or improving customer satisfaction.

The programme was two-fold; development of the individual and development of the business. Individual development began with the use of psychometrics, 360o feedback and mentoring sessions aimed at increasing self awareness and perception of others. Formal training sessions developed skills in marketing, project management, opportunity scanning and creating service excellence.

The results have been extremely positive with increased revenue of 14%, cost savings of 18% and further increases in revenue of 23% predicted for the current academic year; all achieved against a backdrop of economic downturn. We have also added to the range of services offered, engaged with a variety of new clients and significantly increased customer satisfaction levels (all evidenced through marketing research methods).

North Highand College Winners PartnershipWinner - North Highland College (Industry Sponsored Graduateship Scheme)

Dounreay Site Resoration Ltd (DSRL) is developing world-class expertise in nuclear decommissioning, waste management and the environmental restoration of its sites. Dounreay represents UKAEA's biggest and most complex environmental challenge involving a long-term programme of decommissioning. To help ensure that the decommissioning work progresses in line with established plans, DSRL has offered sponsorship to individuals to undertake selected advanced level engineering courses at The North Highland College UHI. This is hoped to encourage the development of engineering skills in various disciplines to help prevent local skills shortages in the future.

These sponsorships are designed to offer candidates of an appropriate calibre the opportunity to develop towards fulfilling future engineering, managerial and/or business positions at Dounreay. Graduates also supplement their College education with monitored on-site work experience during summer as well as in-company training and development days with UKAEA.

Dundee College Highly Commended PartnershipHighly Commended - Dundee College (A Modern Apprenticeship for a 21st Century Industry)

Development of a Life Sciences Modern Apprenticeships Programme for Scotland.

A collaborative partnership of four colleges Adam Smith; Dundee; Forth Valley and Inverness worked with the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies to produce a Life Sciences Modern Apprenticeship. This was completed in consultation with employers and key partners in the sector in order to produce a programme which meets the needs of employers.

The Life Sciences Modern Apprenticeship for Scotland will have a positive impact on recruitment, retention and up-skilling at technician level within the life sciences sector.

The MAs will:

  • Engage a higher number of small and medium sized employers with training
Anniesland College Partnership Working photoCommended - Anniesland College (Community Based Training for Employment)

This project consisted of a partnership of 10 organisations that provided a strategic spread over the West and Northwest of Glasgow City Council's highly disadvantaged communities.

It was designed to reach ‘Hard-to-Reach' trainees in some of the most disadvantaged regions in Glasgow and targeted those high within Government policy in need of training and support to enter the labour market. The project worked with a variety of local partners with specific target groups and wider partnerships to deliver skill based training in the community.

The project was designed to provide support through early engagement, work preparation, life skills, motivational and vocational skill training to develop employment skills and work experience as recommended via Scottish Government strategic policies.

The main objective of the partnership was to complement Government and local strategic policies. Target groups consisted of economically inactive, including young people in need of more chances more choices, LTU, lone parents, those with no qualifications, lack of work experience, BMEs, and those with a history of substance/alcohol abuse.

2009 Award for
Customer Service

Angus College Winners Customer ServiceWinner - Angus College (Improving customer service through influencing the influencers)

This submission will demonstrate how Angus College used a highly creative approach to improving the quality of customer service our clients receive from two of our key influencing groups. Through ensuring that School Guidance staff and Careers Scotland staff have a much greater understanding of our products and services, our potential clients, in turn, then receive accurate and meaningful information from the organisations or people supporting them in careers decision making.

The challenge - How does Angus College ensure that key influencers such as Schools Guidance staff and Careers Scotland staff are kept fully informed of all College courses to support them in correctly advising schools pupils and other potential clients on the most suitable College programme. The solution - Speed Dating, with a difference!

Three lunches were organised over a three month period and 40 careers and guidance staff invited into College on all three occasions to enjoy lunch. During each course, they were joined by a different Academic Team where they discussed, in detail, all aspects of the provision they offered.

The events were a new and creative way of getting across a range of important information to two of our key influencing groups and were considered a resounding success. We wanted to build relationships, put names to faces, give them real value in the shortest possible time and ensure they had a very enjoyable experience on each of their visits. This was achieved and much, much more.

Clydebank CollegeHighly Commended - Clydebank College (Routes for Learning)

Our customer is the Community Learning & Development (CLD) section of West Dunbartonshire Council and in turn their customer is the community it serves. West Dunbartonshire once a thriving manufacturing and production area for ship building, whisky, engineering etc. now has the second highest unemployment rate in Scotland with 22% of those in employment in receipt of some form of benefit. The skills base is low and the population is ageing.

The College and the Council identified community based learning opportunities as a means of supporting people escape the low income/ no income cycle and support the Council to deliver themes identified in its Corporate Plan 2008 -12.

We meet our customer’s needs by having a Service Level Agreement (SLA) in place to provide meaningful learning experiences, progression routes, and tailored courses, with experienced tutors, in a range of venues across West Dunbartonshire on an agreed day, time and place negotiated by our customer with the local community.

Moray College Commended Customer ServiceCommended - Moray College (Customer care through Induction)

After engaging with students through focus groups, early experience survey's, suggestion boxes and "Big Brother" event it became apparent there were gaps in our provision from acceptance onto course, through to start date and beyond. Students who had been offered a place in March didn't have any meaningful engagement with us until August when induction dates were sent to them. Then on arrival it became apparent through "early experience" survey's that students found the induction process "boring".

We also realised induction wasn't only about the first few days attending college, induction started from acceptance onwards so we decided to put the fun factor into it from an early stage.

The Assistant Principal for Student Services, The Student Advice Manager and the Registry Officer made up the team who would take the new initiatives forward and bring it all together for the start of the 2009/2010 session.

Anniesland College Winners EqualityWinner - Anniesland College (Dance for All)

Dance for All is a project designed to introduce the physical, mental and social benefits of dance to a diverse range of beginners whilst promoting understanding and respect between participating groups and students.

Groups are identified by the Project Leader and then assigned to a pair of students. In 2009, these groups were as follows:
  • Adult women, ranging from 35-75 years, comprising current members of teaching and administrative staff, retired college lecturers and local OAP's.
  • Students from Anniesland College's Special Programmes, ranging from 20 to 50 years who have mild to moderate learning difficulties and poor motor skills
  • Dance students from NC Dance, who are in the very early stages of their training and have little understanding of what dance can achieve in a community setting.
  • Children from Garscadden Primary School P.7
  • Children from Bankhead Primary School P.3
  • Children from Blairdardie Primary School P.1
Dumfries and Galloway College Highly Commended EqualityHighly Commended - Dumfries and Galloway College (Diversity Week)

Diversity Week is a promotional and multi-activity campaign designed and implemented by a partnership involving support departments, the Students Association and external agencies. The geography and demographics of the region mean that students often have a limited experience and understanding of equality and diversity issues and are therefore ill prepared for dealing with this aspect of college life. The college has responded through ensuring that equality and diversity forms part of our curriculum delivery. Following discussion at the Regional Diversity Working Group members of the College's Equality Committee agreed a week-long event organised in partnership with the Students Association, to focus on the actual experiences of students, reinforce the curriculum, raise awareness and promote active involvement. The college's first Diversity week in September 2009 was a great success, judged by all criteria, and led to students planning and engaging in a range of further activities throughout the year.

Dundee College WinnersCommended - Dundee College (British Sign language for Lifeskills year 2 learners)

The provision of sign language training for a group of Special Programmes students is an example of how Dundee College embraces learner engagement while encompassing the ethos of equality and diversity. At the request of the students, the planned programme of study was adjusted to allow the group the opportunity to learn sign language. This was to help them communicate more readily with another member of the group who suffered a hearing impairment. Arrangements were made, using funding linked to disability support, for a tutor qualified in British Sign Language to work with the group on a regular basis over 24 weeks.

The students took ownership of their learning, growing in confidence and improving their skills for working with others. The student with the hearing impairment could fully participate in the group to the extent of having the confidence to join in social events with his peers out- with college.

Elmwood College Winner InternationalWinner - Elmwood College (China-Scotland Golf Education Project)

Elmwood College has been working in China now for 10 years on the development of golf education to support the advancement of the golf industry in China. Golf is very young in China with the first golf course opening in 1984. When we started, there was no education and training available in Greenkeeping/Golf Course Management or Golf Facility Management. Through 10 years of financial support by the R&A (governing body of Golf based in St Andrews), Elmwood developed a highly successful capacity building project which included developing suitable qualifications and curriculum for use in China and partnering with 8 University and College partners across China. It also incorporated linking with key industry golf club partners, providing technical and educational skills through training of trainers and developing the St Andrews International Golf Qualification certification brand. This phase of the project is now being replaced by a sustainable working model to ensure its success continues for another 10 years.

Perth College Highly Commended InternationalHighly Commended - Perth College UHI (Aircraft Engineering)

Perth College UHI's international activity in the field of Aircraft Engineering tells a real success story.

After an initial visit to India by the College Principal and International Director, September 2009 saw 95 international students enrolled on its Aircraft Engineering courses.
