Mental Health Crisis Procedures
Policies and procedures are essential to give guidance on what to do in a crisis. Ideally staff should also be trained in mental health crisis intervention. This section includes some basic information on what to do in a mental health crisis and could be used in staff training.

A crisis is an event that requires immediate intervention in order to stop the situation getting worse.

In this brief section you can read about what to do in three of the most common mental health crisis situations.

Mental Health Crises usually take the form of:
  • Suicidal behaviour or intention
  • Panic attacks or extreme anxiety
  • Psychotic episodes

Please note: It is not always possible to successfully intervene when a person is very distressed. Occasionally intervention may be unsafe or impossible.

Here is a icon Crisis Intervention Leaflet (pdf version) (84.88 kB) or icon Crisis Intervention Leaflet (word version) (196 kB) that can be edited to suit your particular college/university. As an alternative here it is in word and formatted without diagrams or graphics for use with text reading software icon Crisis Intervention formatted for text readers (62.5 kB).

You may also find the HandsOnScotland Toolkit from Barnardos useful when working with children or young people in distress.
