The term 'mental health' is often misinterpreted to mean mental illness. The two are not the same, although they are closely connected. Mental illness and mental health are related in a similar way to physical illness and physical health and fitness. Mental fitness or well-being is at the heart of good mental health just as physical fitness is at the heart of good physical health. Both mental and physical fitness and well being can help protect us from disease and distress and also help us to recover more quickly if we become unwell.
