Mental Health
The term 'mental health' is often misinterpreted to mean mental illness. The two are not the same, although they are closely connected. Mental illness and mental health are related in a similar way to physical illness and physical health and fitness.

Mental fitness or well-being is at the heart of good mental health just as physical fitness is at the heart of good physical health.

Both mental and physical fitness and well being can help protect us from disease and distress and also help us to recover more quickly if we become unwell.

Here are some important points to note about mental health:
  • Mental health is a positive term, yet it is often misunderstood to mean mental illness
  • No such misunderstanding occurs when we refer to physical health
  • The reason for the misunderstanding is the fear and stigma that surrounds the word 'mental'
  • Mental health is about being able to function effectively in study, work, leisure and relationships
  • There is a great deal that can be done to enhance mental health and therefore give everyone the opportunity to reach their potential
  • People recover from mental health problems.
