Suicide
Suicide is a problem in Scotland, it is one of the main causes of death in young people and 3 out of 4 suicides are men. Given the additional stresses associated with full time education the risk of suicide must be taken seriously by all colleges/universities.

Read more facts on suicide from Choose Life or download this printable Suicide Fact Sheet.

Here are a number of suggestions of how you can help address the issues of suicide:
  • Training in suicide intervention (ASIST, or Scotland's Mental Health First Aid)
  • Host a SuicideTALK: A 1 - 3 hour awareness raising session based on the question "Should we talk about suicide?"
  • General mental health awareness training (see the notes on crisis procedures in this Toolkit - Suicidal Intention)
  • Have resources available to help a person in crisis. Here is a link to Choose Life the Scottish National Strategy and Action Plan for Suicide Prevention.
